In a spate of late '70's and early '80's paranoia fuelled "animals and oddities go mad" films, Blood Beach takes up the reigns left firmly in place by that great and humorous film 'Piranha'. Although we don't see what is gobbling up the local residents and sun bleached babes until late on in the film I was, as a kid, enthralled by the notion of some man-eating entity living below the sand. This 'b' movie is really, when analyzed, not the greatest viewing fodder. On the other hand I only have good memories of this film and for all you 'b' movie fans out there this is a cut above in the imagination stakes. Some great lines make up for the sub-standard acting (John Saxon, you should know better!!) and an imaginative monster makes up for the sometimes sloppy directing. This film could and should have been so much more. Never-the-less it still, for me, rates along side such greats as Piranha and Alligator. Put on your bikini's girls, throw on a sun lamp or two, hurl around some beach sand and pour yourself a cocktail. Your summer holiday will never feel quite the same again.
